The NHVR has an exciting opportunity for a Heavy Vehicle Inspection Officer to join our team, working across Logan and Darra inspection sites. This is an opportunity to play a critical role in improving road safety by ensuring heavy vehicles operating on Queensland roads meet legislative and safety requirements.

As a Heavy Vehicle Inspection Officer, you will conduct inspections across all types and classes of heavy vehicles to ensure compliance with road transport legislation. You will issue defect notices where required, manage follow-up compliance actions, and contribute to reducing the severity of road trauma while protecting Australia's road infrastructure.

A key aspect of the role is working closely with a broad range of stakeholders. You will provide advice and guidance to transport operators, members of the public, and partner law enforcement agencies on vehicle safety standards, inspection processes, defect notices, and legislative requirements. You may also be called upon to represent the NHVR in court proceedings, providing professional advice and evidence relating to vehicle safety standards and inspection outcomes.

About you

  • A valid Australian motor vehicle driver’s licence
  • Mechanical or Automotive qualification relevant to this role - highly desirable
  • Flexibility to work varying shift times, public holidays and weekends, and undertake travel
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering a high standard of customer service
  • Excellent interpersonal skills where you can foster effective working relationships both internal and external stakeholders
  • Great written communication and record maintenance skills
  • Ability to interpret legislation and experience in working with a range of policies and procedures
  • Established computer skills
  • High level of ethics and a pragmatic approach; familiar with exercising professional judgement and providing effective conflict management
  • Growth mindset and team player attitude
  • Supports others by providing timely information within own area of expertise in an articulate and non-technical manner 
  • Provide on the job support, coaching and mentoring to less experienced staff     
  • A passion for road safety
