About the role

The role of the Policy Advisor is to provide support to the Manager of Fatigue and Human Factors with regards to shaping and delivering legislative, strategic and policy priorities related to safety management, with a focus on Electronic Work Diaries, fatigue and human factors, within the national heavy vehicle law.

Key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Assist with developing and implementing policy advice and strategic planning in the area of Safety Management and Human Factors, including fatigue and Electronic Work Diaries (EWDs).
  • Provide advice to support informed decision making on regulatory activities, oversight and assurance relating to EWDs.
  • Develop and implement strategic heavy vehicle policy in alignment with the broader NHVR’s strategic plan.
  • Proactively contribute to developing, implementing, evaluating, and continuously improving strategic and operational policy, procedures, guidelines and regulations relevant to the NHVR.
  • Liaise and consult with government agencies (federal, state and local), industry and other stakeholders, including representing the NHVR on committees and working groups as required.

The Safety and Productivity Division within NHVR defines and sets regulatory strategy, policy, standards, and desired outcomes. 

This is a critical time to join the function as they undertake assurance activities to ensure the continuous improvement of the regulatory program to enhance the safety and productivity of the industry.

About You

To be successful in this role you will possess:

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage projects or tasks to achieve specific objectives and deliver expected outcomes in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated research, analysis and problem-solving skills, evidenced by the ability to frame issues clearly and precisely, including preparing reports, briefings, procedures and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team of people to provide consistent, responsive and high-quality policy advice and project support.

Ideally you will have:

  • Experience/understanding in the enforcement, use, training and/or record keeping functions of Electronic Work Diary systems.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of Heavy Vehicle National Law.
  • Experience developing educational and support material, preferably in a regulatory environment.
