Who we are
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) commenced operations in 2013 as the national entity responsible for regulating all heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle mass over 4.5 tonnes.
Our Safety & Compliance Officers
The Safety and Compliance Officer undertakes high-quality frontline compliance and enforcement activities, including inspection of heavy and light vehicles, in accordance with legislation, state-wide strategies and Transport operational policies/procedures.
The Safety and Compliance Officer operates with autonomy within the context of their agreed work plan and makes decisions within the limits of delegated authority. The role defers to the relevant Principal Safety and Compliance Officer on issues that require a higher level of resolution or delegation.
Your role will include:
- Ensure compliance with relevant road transport laws, regulations and policies through education and enforcement activities including, but not limited to, vehicle roadworthiness inspections, compliance checks, accident investigation
- Contribute to effective Transport enforcement action by using judgement in applying a suite of sanctions including warnings, penalty notices, breach and investigation reports.
- Apply compliance technological tools and equipment to record vehicle intercepts and inspections, and to conduct compliance checks to ensure efficient and effective enforcement.
- Deliver high quality and thorough inspections through expert use of inspection equipment, information technology and computer software applications.
- Apply appropriate education and enforcement action during confrontational interactions with drivers to promote a high level of road safety and customer service in a regulatory environment.
- Maintain sound knowledge of rapidly evolving laws, regulations and operational procedures, and understand the strategic context in which inspectors operate.
Based in Dubbo, you will primarily engage in in Heavy Vehicle Inspection Scheme (HVIS) and Heavy Vehicle Safety Station (HVSS) activities, and occasionally On Road Enforcement (ORE) tasks. Travel is required regularly, including week-long stays.
Upon commencement you will start a comprehensive training program that involves practical, online and on the job training.

About you
As a Safety and Compliance Officer you will have:
- Automotive mechanical trade qualification
- Motor vehicle open driver license
- Flexibility to work varying shift times and weekends, and undertake travel
- Demonstrated experience in delivering a high standard of customer service
- Excellent interpersonal skills where you can foster effective working relationships
- Great written communication and record maintenance skills
- Demonstrated commitment and passion for road safety
- Established computer skills – including experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook
- High level of ethics and a pragmatic approach; familiar with exercising professional judgement and can provide effective conflict management
- Growth mindset and team player attitude
- Experience in working with a range of policies and procedures
