About the role

Based at our Newstead office, the Senior Policy Advisor is responsible for providing support to the Manager Strategic Policy to shape and deliver legislative, strategic and policy priorities related to the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).

Key responsibilities of this role are:

Drive planning, coordination, and development of policy advice and strategic planning, particularly around the HVNL Review and advocating for legislative change.

  • Develop, and advocate for, national policy and legislative reform, and its positioning within the broader National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s strategic plan.
  • Manage projects, ensuring completion within statutory, regulatory and financial obligations.
  • Provide advice to support informed decision-making on a range of legislative, strategic and policy matters relevant to the NHVR.
  • Initiate, build and maintain networks and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and represent the NHVR on committees and working groups as required.
  • Conduct research and analyse complex data, issues and trends

 About You

As the ideal candidate you will have a depth of experience in a similar position and have high levels of written, oral and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to analyse legislation and negotiate desired outcomes with internal and external stakeholders including local, state and national levels.

Motivated to contribute to outcomes, you will be an out of the box thinker, who thrives in solving complex technical matters and discussions.  Your exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills will see you successfully work with a diverse internal and external group.

To be successful in this role you will possess

  • Have 4+ years of experience in similar role
  • Hold a degree in law, public policy or related discipline highly regarded
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and manage legislative reform projects to deliver timely and effective results in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.
  • Proven ability to engage systems thinking and operate at a strategic level.
  • Demonstrated fundamental skills in; research, analysis and problem solving evidenced by ability to frame complex issues clearly and precisely including the preparation of advice, reports, policy documentation, briefings, procedures and guidelines.
