About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Project Officer to join our team. This is a hands-on role and is pivotal to ensuring the Strategic Local Government Asset Assessment Project is delivered on time and on budget. You will work under the supervision of a Project Manager, and you will use your suite of project management skills to develop project briefs, provide advice, develop and implement project plans, and track progress.

Contract administration is key to the role, and you will work with a variety of external consultants in the engineering industry to coordinate the delivery of a large campaign of asset assessments for bridges and culverts across Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. You will work with local councils to enhance their ability to make decisions on what heavy vehicles can access their roads. You will also contribute to qualitative and quantitative reviews of heavy vehicle access outcomes achieved from the project.

This is a temporary full-time role until 31 December 2026 (alternatives to full-time will be considered) in a close, tight-knit and highly performing team. It is preferably based in Brisbane (Melbourne or Adelaide based candidates will also be considered). On offer is a flexible, supportive, and inclusive work environment where the work you produce plays an important part in freight and supply logistics in Australia.

About You

You don’t need to know anything about the heavy vehicle industry or issues around local council road access (although you will get bonus points if you do). However, you will have extensive experience in a project environment with strong skills in project scheduling, budget management, data analysis, planning, and reporting.

To be successful in this role you will possess:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, organise and prioritise tasks, resolve complex problems, and manage deadlines.
  • Work well as part of a team to provide consistent, responsive, and high-quality advice and project support.
  • Be a proactive, clear, and factual communicator with the ability to explain technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Lateral thinking, strong negotiation & influencing skills and your attention to detail will see you thrive in this role.
  • An understanding of the heavy vehicle industry, regulatory compliance and road related infrastructure is highly desirable.

Why join us?

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) commenced operations in 2013 as the national entity responsible for regulating all vehicles in Australia over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass. The NHVR minimises the compliance burden on the heavy vehicle transport industry, reduces duplication and inconsistences across state and territory borders, and ultimately for the heavy vehicle business with government in Australia.

We are headquartered in Brisbane and employ more than 1000 people across the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria.

We offer- (update as needed depending on role)

  • A competitive salary package of $125,747 + superannuation increasing to $132,034 in July
  • Monthly RDO and paid leave over Christmas closure.
  • Hybrid working environment –  up to2 days from home.
