About the role

Based at our Newstead office the Policy Advisor is responsible for providing support to the Manager Fatigue and Human Factors with regard to shaping and delivering legislative, strategic and policy priorities related to safety management, with a focus on fatigue and human factors, within the national heavy vehicle law

Key responsibilities of this role are:

Assist with developing and implementing policy advice and strategic planning in the area of Safety Management and Human Factors, including fatigue.

  • Provide advice to support informed decision making on the evaluation of effectiveness of Safety Management systems (SMS) and Fatigue Risk Management Systems (FRMS).
  • Develop and implement strategic heavy vehicle policy in alignment with the broader NHVR’s strategic plan.
  • Undertake research on matters relevant to the role, analyse data, issues and trends, and prepare quality evidence-based policy proposals, briefings and correspondence that communicate findings, recommend policy positions and identify areas for reform.
  • Proactively contribute to developing, implementing, evaluating, and continuously improving strategic and operational policy, procedures, guidelines and regulations relevant to the NHVR.
  • Liaise and consult with government agencies (federal, state and local), industry and other stakeholders, including representing the NHVR on committees and working groups as required.

As the ideal candidate you will have experience with policy interpretation and writing. You will be a self-starter and have the ability to work autonomously whilst working part of a greater team and strategic direction.

To be successful in this role you will possess

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage projects or tasks to achieve specific objectives and deliver expected outcomes in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to negotiate matters to desired outcomes with internal and external stakeholders at local, state and national levels.
  • Demonstrated research, analysis and problem-solving skills, evidenced by the ability to frame issues clearly and precisely, including preparing reports, briefings, procedures and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team of people to provide consistent, responsive and high-quality policy advice and project support.
